October 17 - 25, 2002
Harvest Moon Regatta, an offshore race from Galveston to Port Aransas, takes place in October
of each year on the full harvest moon. Although billed as a 'Gentleman's Race' (Gentlemen never sail
to weather)...well, we had plenty of weather. NOAA was calling for 5 - 10 knot winds during the entire
race. The race started under those conditions at 2pm Thursday. But by Friday morning at daybreak we
we experiencing 30-35 knot winds and 8-10 foot seas which built to 10-15 feet by later that day. A high
pressure off the coast held fast as a low moved down from the plains. The steep gradient worked like
gears meshing to generate the winds. Before everyone could return safely home after the race, another
system would move through, a hurricane would cross across Mexico from the Pacific into the Gulf, Corpus
Christi whould be hit by a devastating tornado, and the Hill Country of Texas would experience tremendous flooding
Justin has an interesting recollection of the race: Justin's Report
